19 Nov 2009 | 12:00 amIs Your ISP Ripping You Off? Is your ISP ripping you off? Recently, my ISP decided to go the route of setting a download limit for all their data accounts. Unfortunately, this is a trend that seems to be on the rise. Many of the major ISP’s in the US are now limiting the download limit, and their justification for doing so is really quite odd. -

GeoCities Hosting Calls it Quits
26 Oct 2009 | 5:20 pmIt looks like GeoCities, the Free Web Hosting service owned by Yahoo!, is officially ending service to website owners today. I’m sure many of you have used their service at one point or another, so it’s kind of sad to see them go down with all of the web sites they hosted. My first web site was on GeoCities, complete with a looping, low-quality instrumental midi file, and animated graphics. Many other free web hosting services like GeoCities have risen and fallen over the years because the free hosting business model just doesn’t seem sustainable. It’s amazing how many… -

I remember when I’d be out celebrating if HostGator managed to get two signups in a week. Now, we’re seeing thousands of signups a week. Back in the day, my celebrating consisted of nothing more than dropping the Ramen noodles or the tuna can I had in my hands and grabbing some sushi for an hour before scrambling back to work. At the time, I was a poor college student who invested every penny I had back into the business I was building. The HostGator.com domain was registered on… -

Anatomy of an Outage
10 Aug 2009 | 2:02 pmWednesday, August 5, 2009 started out as a normal day at HostGator’s Houston headquarters. Around 4:00 PM CT, a major power surge that occurred as the result of a transformer near our office blowing up made the day anything but ordinary. Lights flickered, battery backups beeped, fire alarms went off, and Internet signals all died down almost immediately. People began to wait for the building’s $200,000 hurricane-ready generator to start up, but it didn’t. In the mean time, one of the three major “legs” of power that feeds the building with the power it needs to function was out… -

Common Sysadmin Mistakes Start-Ups Make
21 Oct 2009 | 1:02 amVia Hacker News, here is a blog post from cloudkick — Three sysadmin mistakes start-ups make. While being a start-up with scaling issues is a sign that things are going well, sometimes such a small team does not have the expertise to make sure all their servers are in order. We wanted to share a couple pitfalls that we have helped diagnose in hopes to prevent other start-ups from doing the same thing. It pointed out that Switching out your Apache with an alternative when you are in trouble is bad. Don’t use SQLite in production. fork(2) is one of the most expensive system calls… -
Building CouchDB 0.9 on Debian 5
7 Sep 2009 | 5:32 pmI have been using CouchDB recently to build some of my new projects. It’s a new schema-less, document-modelled, highly concurrent, Erlang powered “database” where you wrote map reduce functions in design views to create queries and indices. It is also very neat to bootstrap a project when you have not worked out the relational model of your database yet, due to its schema-less nature. I am still getting my head around it (coming from 15 years of SQL experience), but so far so good. I guess one issue with CouchDB is that it’s HTTP-based interface is still not fixed, and…

A handful of customers missing mail data temporarily.
21 Nov 2009 | 11:18 amA small number of accounts had mail that was unable to be moved over to new hardware before we had to power down the last of our servers and move them out of the old data center. For now we are setting up those users (without the data) on the new system so they should still be functional and we’ll be working on restoring the data once we have moved the servers (the data is not lost, just not currently available). We apologize for this – we understand how important mail is and wanted to reassure those effected that we’re aware of the matter and are working to correct it. -
Wolverine declawed
19 Nov 2009 | 9:54 amWe’re sad to report that the wolverine server is experiencing some issues returning from a reboot we needed to complete this morning. We’re working on this right now and will update this post as soon as we have additional information. UPDATE: We truly apologize for the lack of updates on this post. Due to the central services migration from last night, this post slipped past us. The great news is that this issue is completely resolved. We found that the issue keeping this server down was a bad mount to the file server. We fixed this and the server was able to come back… -

Sign up for only a cent by using the hostgator coupon – webhosting here This is a cpanel question posted by Mysteerie on 23 October 2009 There really needs to be a better backup script as even on very powerful servers the backup script causes higher loads and there are a lot issues with it. Cyber Monday: Creative Myth or Certain Marketing?
20 Nov 2009 | 2:59 pmWith Cyber Monday fast approaching online business owners have to be asking themselves whether they are ready for the potential traffic and sales or do they even believe that small online businesses truly see spikes during this time? Cyber Monday started out as a marketing term hyped by ecommerce store Shop.org. Is it a myth, or something more? It was in 2005 that the ecommerce store created the term to have something catchy to market about during the upcoming holiday season. I still remember the first time I heard a newscaster read it aloud on the television. Just the sound of it caught my… -
Affiliate Programs that Work for You
29 Oct 2009 | 7:37 amFor those of you who may not be familiar with the term ‘affiliate program,’ this is a type of relationship where companies will pay you a commission for bringing sales to them. There are many companies, such as Commission Junction and Share-a-Sale, who serve as an intermediary in an affiliate relationship. They track sales and pay out commissions on behalf of the company and, in exchange, take a fee for the service they provide. Many companies also offer in-house affiliate programs. In this instance the company will provide you the banners and links to advertise their products and… -

Symantec’s report on cybercrime reveals the volume and lucrativeness of identity theft. Credit cards, the hottest commodity, account for nearly 33% of all… -

FBI Warns of “Money Mule” ACH Scheme Targeting SMB Bank Accounts
5 Nov 2009 | 3:00 amThe FBI released a statement this week warning small and medium businesses about a significant increase in fraud involving valid online banking credentials. “Within the last several months, the FBI has seen a significant increase in fraud involving the exploitation of valid online banking credentials belonging to small and medium businesses, municipal governments, and school districts. In a typical scenario, the targeted entity receives a “spear phishing” e-mail which either contains an infected attachment, or directs the recipient to an infected website. Stealth Cyber Attacks on SMBs are Increasingly Attractive to Hackers
29 Oct 2009 | 10:00 pmMcAfee’s study, “The Security Paradox” examines how small and medium organizations that employ between 51-1,000 workers address IT security and growing cyber threats. An overarching theme of the report reveals that SMBs around the world (and particularly in North America) believe they are too small and pose too little value to hackers to be worth their time, but recent trends in hacker and cybercrime activity reveal that’s just not the case. In reality, SMBs’ limited resources, inadequate security, and lack of technical expertise make them more vulnerable to…

iPhone App Tells You How Attractive You Are
19 Nov 2009 | 11:19 amNot sure how attractive you really are? There’s an app for that. The app is called “Fit or Fugly,” judges your appearance based off the proportions of your face. You submit a photo of yourself, and then use the touch screen to make sure the app knows where your nose, ears, eyes and mouth are. I couldn’t bring myself to spend the $0.99 for this app – why spend a buck if I already know I’m dead sexy But seriously, if anyone has actually used this, I’d love to hear how it works and if you were happy or offended by the feedback it gave you!
